Swallows is a Christian Novel set during the Great Trek. In the late 1830s, Afrikaner farmers on the eastern frontier of the Cape Colony, after many decades of ongoing war and hardship, trekked into the interior of South Africa. They trusted in God for their safe passage and future prosperity, but they found extreme trials and hostility. Their faith prevailed. Today, the legacy of their migration is judged variously, but the Gospel of Jesus Christ that they carried with them endures. Swallows follows the exploits of young Thomas Botha and his family as they trek with Retief’s party. A young man’s struggles with temptation and the hard questions of faith that come with extreme adversity are a backdrop to the story. Gabadi kaDlungwana, a young warrior in Dingane’s army, is Thomas’ opposite. Both have girls in their lives who challenge their respective belief-systems. Both are involved in the massacre at Bloukraans and the Battle of Blood River. We see God’s salvation and mercy transcending racial prejudice, across generations. Some flee the winter, like swallows, undertaking long hard journeys. Others stay and endure it. It is the trials that test our faith. It is in the trials that Jesus shines most. Read more
